Taiwan has stepped up its military preparations, with the yearly Taiwan War Games simulating how the island would respond to a future Chinese military assault. On Monday, August 10, Taiwanese military conducted a huge live-fire practice on the Penghu Islands, training how to repel a simulated Chinese airborne attack.

The exercise is part of Taiwan’s largest yearly defense exercise, the 10-day Han Kuang military drills. The drills are intended to put the country’s ability to respond to military strikes, communication interruptions, and other emergency situations to the test if China attempts to take over the island militarily.

On Monday morning, troops from Taiwan’s First Theater Command opened fire during a live-fire practice on a Penghu beach. M60A3 tanks, artillery systems, and antiaircraft guns were utilized as part of a multifaceted defense strategy to prevent a simulated Chinese airborne assault from establishing a foothold on the islands.

Penghu is strategically important since it is located in the Taiwan Strait, which is closer to Taiwan’s main island than mainland China. Military planners see the islands as a potential early target in a confrontation because they may serve as a base for missile and drone activities.

Reuters was granted unusual access to the practice and witnessed soldiers prepare ammo and moving into shooting positions before daylight. Penghu reservists also participated in the practice, which was part of a 14-day training program aimed at increasing coordination between reserve and active military personnel.

The drill demonstrates Taiwan’s efforts to make its military training more realistic. Instead of depending solely on regular troops, the armed forces are progressively incorporating reserve personnel into operations planning.

Another key aspect of the Taiwan War Games takes place away from the battlefield. Taiwan’s government is testing a temporary suspension of mobile internet services in central Taiwan as part of a civil defense exercise.

The purpose is to learn how citizens would communicate if mobile bandwidth were limited due to a natural disaster, infrastructure collapse, or armed war. The exercise will assist authorities in assessing communication systems during emergency situations.

Essential services will continue to run normally. According to officials, ATM services, traffic signals, and emergency ambulance calls would not be impacted. Landline phone services and fixed internet connections will also be accessible.

The government informed the public ahead of time about the exercise. A bilingual text message in Chinese and English was issued to mobile phones throughout Taiwan, and officials also posted an explanation video on social media.

Northern Taiwan, including Taipei, is set to perform a similar mobile internet trial later this week.

The most recent Taiwan War Games demonstrate the growing relevance of both military and civilian preparedness. Although the drills do not indicate an imminent invasion, they demonstrate how seriously Taiwan is preparing for a potential conflict with China.
